The St. John’s Bible

Saturday May 9, 2009
$35.00 per person

In 1998, master calligrapher Donald Jackson was commissioned by Saint John’s University of Collegeville, Minnesota—one  of America's leading Catholic universities—to create the first hand-written bible in more than 500 years. “In the tradition of great medieval Bibles, The Saint John's Bible is two feet tall, three feet wide, and more than 1,000 pages bound in seven distinct volumes.  It contains approximately 160 illuminations, and interprets and illustrates scripture from a contemporary perspective, reflecting our multicultural world and humanity's enormous strides in science and technology. English translation and the themes of the Bible reflect the Church in the modern world.”

The Saint John’s Bible began its international exhibition tour with the opening of Illuminating the Word at The Minneapolis Institute of Arts in April, 2005. From mid-February, through late May, 2009, an exhibit entitled Modern Vision through Medieval Methods will be on view at the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore. The Walters’ exhibit will feature both the fourth and fifth volumes—Prophets and Wisdom Books respectively. Prophets, completed in April 2005, includes 232 pages and 20 illuminations. Wisdom Books, completed in July of 2006, includes 136 pages and 24 illuminations.

The Walters Art Museum is internationally renowned for its collection of art, which was amassed substan-tially by two men, William and Henry Walters, and eventually bequeathed to the City of Baltimore. The collection presents an overview of world art from pre-dynastic Egypt to 20th-century Europe, and counts among its many treasures Greek sculpture and Roman sarcophagi; medieval ivories and Old Master paintings; Art Deco jewelry and 19th-century European and American masterpieces.

The Saint Johns’ Bible is a monumental calligraphic work by a master penman, and should not be missed! An opportunity to view these magnificent hand-written and illustrated volumes is truly a chance of a life-time. More detailed information—date, cost, itinerary—will be provided in the Winter newsletter.
