| My
work includes personalized documents, decorative broadsides, commemorative albums
and customized journals, as
well as one-of-a-kind and limited edition artist's books. I employ a variety of
styles and media and draw on my interest in medieval art, paper surfacing techniques,
modern American poetry, historical book forms, the Arts & Crafts Movement, block
prints, collage, and ceramic tiles. When designing a calligraphic piece, I try
to explore the power and mood of words through color, style, texture, and size,
hoping to find layers of meaning that create rapport with the viewer. My focus
on text and ways to reveal meaning through form and design stems from academic
training as a writer and nearly two decades in book publishing. I
have taught at four community arts centers as well as the Philadelphia Museum
of Art, been on the "Artists in Education Roster" of the Pennsylvania Council
on the Arts since
1995, and have participated in Philadelphia's "Art Futures Program," which brings
working artists into area schools. My calligraphic "Alpha Dog" was part of the
public art progam, Art Unleashed, sponsored by the Main Line Art Center in 2002,
and a trilogy of artist's books, "Wings," was selected for a tour (2003-2005)
with the national Guild of Bookworkers exhibit, "In Flight." I am current president
of the Philadelphia Calligraphers' Society. |
